The objective of this new Master Bath was to capture the surrounding trees, mountains, and sky; bringing them into the bathroom and illuminating the space with natural light and beauty. The weather in upper Nuuanu Valley is typically very dramatic and one we considered a great opportunity experientially. While bathing in a nice warm bath, one can enjoy the cool rains, gusty tradewinds and ever-present rainbows. The use of effective cross ventilation allows for the cool Nuuanu breezes to lightly blow throughout the bathroom, hinting of the natural conditions outside.
This bathroom was greatly inspired by the original master bath designed by Douglas Ackerman, which can be seen in the images. The original bath had wonderful natural qualities including warm woods, skylights of the kakui tree above and plant shelves to bring the outdoors in. Because of the new master bedroom configuration, the new master bath orientation was changed 90 degrees and now affords amazing views of the mountains beyond. The sky window not only opens up to the mountains beyond but takes the eye right up into the majesty of the large Hawaiian almond tree above. The wet room concept with the bathtub and shower combined in one space provides a larger than life bathing and showering experience without the necessity of shower doors or enclosures.
